Oh really? We should get pizza again.

I don't like SOPA/PIPA, but I think that their passing might actually invalidate a scapegoat for the MPAA at least. If they released a film called Rubik's Cube: The Movie in 3D at an uncomfortable theater with $20 popcorn, they'd blame the lack of customers on piracy.

That's actually my point. Turning the entire web black won't do anything. Most Americans won't notice.

However, 10% loss of revenue WOULD be noticed by the RIAA/MPAA.

My point is simply if what the RIAA/MPAA does pisses the Digerati off soooo darn much, why do they continue to purchase music from major labels and go see movies? At best, if you don't vote with your feet, you're never going to make any progress.

FYI: We're practically neighbors now. I live in Four Seasons at the moment.. :)

It's not actually really that simple. You may not like mind rot, but it seems a lot of people do. The number of people who now brush their teeth with bottles of Jack would depress you. I think that they can do without 10% of their customers; if only 5% of Americans consume any given media, it's considered a roaring success. I think.

We're all guilty of this to varying degrees. I'm more looking at the disparity between "legal" content and "less than legal" content on some of these various enabling technologies and saying "gee, no wonder content companies are pissed, they have every right to be."

I can't argue with this. I've been a lot better at purchasing content with the advent of iTunes and Netflix but I've done plenty of downloading in the past and I can't defend it.

I used to work for Pacific Marketing and Publishing. Those were the amounts told to me. At the time, I had no reason to doubt them. I may be wrong.

Either case, I doubt it's not 50 cents per piece of mail.

What I really wish is that you could work for our company's IT dept; they've got one guy who's top-flight, several who are good but not great, and one dipshit who won't solve the problem but who'll blow some reasonably sweet-smelling smoke up your ass while spending half-an-hour pretending to problem-solve while really not getting anywhere. It's not really the company's fault--how much would they have to pay YOU to move to Wisconsin?--but it sucks that we can't seem to get the best quality people for _anything_ because we can't sip the request past the bean-counters.

I actually was leaning towards "no" for other reasons.. but this kinda nailed it for me.

The Sheriff's Department is a basic service. It should be paid for out of the county's general fund, not by a special levy. Additionally, some of the programs the levy goes towards I have ethical problems with ("drug enforcement").

Actually, I checked into this somewhat. I don't know what mass mailer you worked for, but according to stats I was able to collect, a three-color glossy litho would have cost 5¢ per, 15¢ per if a union shop (which I believe is required for a government agency) was used for the printing, for 100,000-250,000 pieces, mailed in this fashion.

I was also calculating the costs of having it designed and laid up.

Also, what you quote doesn't add up. The USPS must disclose all their rates. The cheapest price I can find on their rate card for bulk mail, machinable, presorted, is 5 cents per item. If you can find a lower rate, please let me know: but I'm going to call BS on this one.

Well, if this was a general fund-raising request, I can follow your logic. But this is a levy that needs a certain percentage of people to vote on it in order to pass. And this postcard serves the critical need of educating the voters as to what this measure, cryptically called "3-378", means.

So it comes down to two scenarios:
1) They don't send out the postcards, save the estimated $70k, the voters know nothing, the levy fails, and the sheriff's office has $70,000 of usable funds.

2) They send out the postcards, costing themselves $70k, the voters are educated and see why this make sense, vote for it, the levy passes, and the sheriff's office has $9,930,000 of usable funds. ($10M - 70k)

Clearly the latter makes sense, and the cost of the postcards is worth the 0.7% of lost budget because it totally pays for itself.

If only 0.7% of the goverment funds are being used for "questionable" things and otherwise provide the valuable services that a sheriff's office performs, that to me seems like a pretty trivial loss compared to many of the true pork barrel programs out there.

I live in Multnomah county, otherwise I would have voted "yes" for this one...
